Blazers move on to PIAA Quarterfinals

After holding Lancaster Mennonite to 16 first-half points, Hughesville coach Nick Tagliaferri was surprised, to say the least, the Blazers came out in the third quarter and put up 25.

As Tagliaferri put after the game, that was one of the biggest differences against the Blazers on Thursday night.

Trailing by just four at halftime, the game slipped away from Hughesville as Lancaster Mennonite scored seven points in a row in a 26-second span in an eventual 61-44 win over Hughesville in the PIAA Class AAA tournament. That spurt gave the Blazers a double-digit lead which was reduced to single digits just three times in the second half.

The Blazers (21-5) play the winner of Neumann-Goretti and Holy Redeemer in the state quarterfinals at a time and site to be determined.

In the first half, Hughesville (17-10) and Lancaster Mennonite played close with the Spartans, staying within striking distance. They held the Blazers to just four points in the second quarter. In the second, a layup by Hughesville’s Matt Myers made it a 16-12 deficit before Lancaster Mennonite used the third quarter to pull away.

After a basket by Hughesville’s Conrad Sheatler with 4:48 to play in the third quarter cut the deficit to 28-20, the Spartans only got to within 11 points just once more with under a minute to play.

Defensively, Lancaster Mennonite pressured Hughesville well in the first half, holding the Spartans to 4 for 20 shooting.

Lancaster Mennonite had three players in double digits, but the one who did the most damage was senior Javan Terry, who had a team-high 22 points. Midway through the third quarter, Terry put together a string of eight consecutive points for Lancaster Mennonite to keep its double-digit lead.

Lancaster Mennonite also received 11 points from junior Carter Hurst and 10 from junior Isaac Beers.
