You had to see it to believe it. After giving up 6-runs in the top of the 5th inning to the Cedar Cliff Colts, the Donegal Indians regrouped and scored 6-runs to take a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the inning. That would prove enough to win the 2017 PIAA Class 5A Championship. This is their second such title, the last one was won by the 2006 softball team on this very date.

The big blow in the 5th inning for the Indians was a bases clearing double by Kaitlyn Witmer that tied the game.
It was a strange game. Threat of rain early then suddenly the sun popped out. Unfortunately, the sun caused Indian short stop Savanna Kolenda, to lose a pop fly ball that opened the flood gates for Cedar Cliff’s 6-run rally in top of the 5th.
The Colts scored an unearned run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the 5th they hit 2 home runs, combined with a single, walk and double to take a 7-3 lead.
Cedar Cliff threatened in the top of the second but Indians all-time winning SP Makyla Yoder, induced a double play ball started by Kaitlyn Witmer to catcher Biesecker. Big time base running mistake for the Colts, who had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out.
Great defensive plays are what you expect from Donegal and in the top of the sixth inning catcher Morgan Beisecker threw out a Colt runner McDonald at third for the 3rd out of the inning.
Donegal scored 3-runs to take the lead in the bottom of the 4th when Yoder doubled, followed by a Witmer walk, Hornick RBI single and a 2-RBI triple to left field by Rachel Robinson. Robinson had 3-RBI’s in the game.
Play of the Game:
Both of these teams faced off just 16 days ago. Cedar Cliff beat Donegal, 9-5, in the District 3 Class 5A semifinals en route to winning the program’s first district championship. The Colts used a six-run seventh inning to help collect the victory. Maddie Sitler and Jimiah McDonald each slugged a home run in the win that denied Donegal a third straight District 3 crown.
This is the second PIAA Title for Donegal this school year. They also won the PIAA Field Hockey Title.
