We are about to embark on the 2017-’18 basketball season. I thought it would be fun to see how Lancaster Catholic won the District 3, Class 4A basketball championship last year by defeating the No. 4 seed Middletown Blue Raiders 86-78 in overtime at the Giant Center. The Blue Raiders led the game until the final 2 minutes of the fourth quarter. Then tied it to force an overtime.
Enjoy the highlights.
For the first half, Lancaster Catholic couldn’t nail a three point shot. They missed their first 9 attempts. The Blue Raiders’ lead kept edging back and forth from a two to three basket lead.
However, the No. 2 seed Catholic still had Sean Landis, who did what he does so well at the low post. His rebounding, scoring and setting up shots for others was critical to the Crusaders’ effort. The team also kept feeding Jon Ware, who kept driving through the paint. The two helped bring back the Crusaders from what appeared early, might become a tough loss.
In the second half, Mark Cannon caught fire along with Sean Landis. And Jon Ware kept scoring in the paint. The three of them forced or rather willed the game into overtime with a 64-64 tie. Cannon hit 3 treys in the fourth quarter and one in OT. Catholic found their perimeter game nailing 6 of 8 three pointers in the second half.
Once freed from the constraints of four quarter basketball, Sean Landis took over. He scored 12 points in OT and the Crusaders scored 22 points overall in the period to capture their third district title and first since 2011.
Sean Landis led all players with 26 points while the always smiling Jon Ware scored 24.
Checkout the highlights…..especially the end of the first quarter 3-pointer at half court by the Blue Raiders’ Luke Mrakovich.
