Before we review the upcoming season it’s fun to look back at the past one.
The undefeated Cedar Crest Falcons won the 2016-’17 Girls Basketball L-L League Championship by defeating the Red Tornado of McCaskey 49-43.
It was an all Section One shootout for the championship. Cedar Crest had already won the Section One Title with McCaskey finishing in second place.
After the first quarter McCaskey led 8 to 4. Then the undefeated Falcons (25-0) came roaring back with 20 points in the second quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish. Three Falcons nailed 3-pointers in the second quarter–Ariel Jones, Rachel Witherite and Alyssa Austin to put the Falcons back on top. The Falcons finished the half on a 12-0 run.
In the second half however the Red Tornadoes did not quit. They came back to within one point in the fourth quarter with about 4 minutes remaining. But a 3-pointer by Witherite and the relentless rebounding efforts of Alyssa Austin, who also led all players with 16 points, made all the difference. The Falcons win their seventh L-L League Title. Their past titles were in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2015.
The Red Tornado played a zone defense that helped to keep Ariel Jones to just 8 points until the final minutes and that is certainly one reason the game was so close to the end.
The Red Tornado were looking for their 5th title. Their past L-L League titles were in 1982, ’83, ’84, and 1990.
The Falcons end the season undefeated with a 25-0 record as both teams head into District 3 play.
The Red Tornado finish their season with a 17-7 record.
