The girls basketball season is about to begin but it is worth remembering the great season that the Lebanon Catholic Beavers had last season. They defeated the Juniata Valley Hornets 55-43 to win the Class 1A State Basketball Championship.
The PIAA title was the third for Head Coach Patricia Hower and first since 1995. The Beavers won the District 3 Class 1A title this year and Coach Hower also passed her 700 win mark earlier in the season.
The Beavers came out cold and trailed early but then dominated the first half after going on a 20-1 point run.
Catholic’s Alexis Hill led all players with 20 points. Celine Mars added 14 for the Beavers. Maddie Mattas led the Hornets with 11 points.
The Beavers’ defense was so strong that the Hornets hit just 3 of 27 first half shots. And rarely had a second chance to score from a rebound.
Juniata Valley pulled within five points of the Beavers but that was as close as they would come.
Good news for the Beavers, every player returns to the team next year.
