The Ephrata Mounts (18-5) defeated the Central York Panthers 7 to 5 Monday evening in the opening round of the District Three Class AAAA playoffs at Ephrata War Memorial Field. What a game! The umpires changed two calls and missed a balk call that cost the Mounts the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The highlights capture most of the action in this back and forth battle for the right to move on to the quarterfinals.
Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish, the fourth Mounts’ pitcher of the evening, came in with runners on second and third with one out in the top of the 6th inning with the game tied. He then calmly proceeded to strike out one Panther and force another to ground out into an inning ending third out. He retired all five batters he faced to pick up the win. One could argue he deserved a save too.
Central York (12-9) is a good team but they committed 6 errors so that whenever they took the lead, they let the Mounts back in. One thing Mounts know how to do is to take advantage of mistakes. Mounts’ third baseman Chase Weik made two sterling plays in the field and also drove in the game winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth. But equally important is the fact that the Mounts’ players hit their cutoffs and are always positioned to make the right play at the right time. Like when they nailed a Panther runner flying into second because the throw from the outfield was on the money where the infielder was waiting and perfectly situated to tag the runner for the out. That was a huge play in such a close game.
