Mike Vogel’s Black Knights (15-0) claimed their 18th Lancaster-Lebaon League boys’ volleyball tournament title with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-23 triumph over the Cocalico Eagles (16-4).
It’s the third L-L title in five years for Hempfield, which sounds like a lot for most everybody else. But the Knights were irked about missing out on last year’s title, plus another three years ago.
“Last year was a little disappointing, so it’s nice to get it back,” said senior outside hitter Chris Booth, who ripped a match-high 16 kills at The Arena.
Said Vogel: “It’s a great feeling to win a league championship. It really is. And, yes, we’ve won many of these, but we didn’t win it last year, and we didn’t win it three years ago. Before, it was almost our right to win this, and we didn’t. Trust me, it’s on their mind. They wanted to come out of here with a little bragging rights, get the banner that says ‘2015’ on the wall.”
Hempfield, the No. 2 seed in District 3-AAA, will meet the winner of Exeter vs. Dallastown in Monday’s quarterfinals. Cocalico, the No. 4 seed in District 3-AA, faces Brandywine Heights in Monday’s quarters.
