Under the lights with the weather cooperating, the Annville-Cleona Dutchmen defeated the Lancaster Mennonite Blazers 4-3.
After beating Lancaster Catholic Thursday that means the Dutchmen are now in first place in Section 4 with a 2-0 record. Yes it’s early. But a win is a win in a 14 game schedule.
Tonight’s game was a lesson in “don’t give in” and you might just win.
Down 4-2, the Blazers left six men on base in the 5th and 6th innings. In both innings they had the bases loaded but Dutchmen pitchers slammed the door shut. The Blazers’ also had trouble running the bases. Twice they failed to score from third when they had the chance.
A-C’s winning pitcher Andrew Long struck out Cole Forte, who had doubled off of him in the first inning, to end the 5th inning threat. Long finished with 6 k’s in 5 innings.
In the 6th inning, relief pitcher Trevan Elliott struck out Cee Torres with the bases loaded to escape another threat.
The Blazers scored their two runs in the first inning after Cole Forte hit a two rbi double to right field.
The Dutchmen scored all of their runs in the 3rd inning. Tyler Long drove in the first run with a double to right center. Two batters later Hunter Kelley ripped a double over the center fielder’s head for more 2 RBIs. An error allowed the fourth and winning A-C run to score.
Fun night, not for the outfielder’s though. It was difficult to pick up the ball. In total there were 7 errors in the game. The Blazers had 5 of them.
Mike Miller the Dutchmen head coach said, “we haven’t even had a scrimmage with the bad weather we’ve had. It’s nice to start off with some wins.”
Congrats to the Dutchmen for beating both Lancaster Catholic and Lancaster Mennonite in back-to-back games. The Lancaster Crusaders’ were last year’s Section Four, L-L League and District 3 winners.
For the record the Dutchmen last year went 13-3 in Section Four, 16-6 overall and made it to the L-L League quarterfinals and District 3 Class 3A semifinals.
The Blazers’ head coach is Eric Hollinger who is in his 3rd year. Last year they had an overall record of 10-10.
