Quarterfinals LL League Championship Series:
There will be a new team carrying the LL League baseball title in 2018.
That’s because the defending champion Lancaster Catholic Crusaders were defeated today 2-0 by the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers at War Memorial Field in Ephrata.
The Crusaders were held to one-hit behind the sterling pitching of Dylan Byler who was masterful for six innings and Josh Howells who came on in relief in the 7th inning for the save.
Byler threw curveballs and a split-finger pitched that dropped just before reaching the plate. For a moment I thought that this was what Jack Morris must have looked like on the mound in high school.
It was a classic pitching duel for sure.
Dillon Marsh, the D1 University of Kentucky bound all-star pitcher for Catholic pitched well too. He gave up only 3 hits while walking 4. He hit 89 twice on the radar, which means it was over 90 MPH as the speed gun at Ephrata is always low.
The big hit for the Pioneers was a second inning 2-RBI double by Joe Meck. The only extra base hit in the game.
Next up are the semifinals. The Pioneers will play Cedar Crest Wednesday at Ephrata War Memorial.
Interview with Dylan Byler and Joe Meck:
Catholic will have to sit out the LL playoffs and pick it up again when District play starts next week. Remember this, L-S lost the LL League playoffs early in 2012 and went all the way to the PIAA state finals. Catholic’s season is not over by a long shot.
