Donegal tops Palmyra for State Title

For the second time this year, the Donegal Indians had to beat the Palmyra Cougars to win a title and they did so in overtime this time.

After scoreless regulation play Mackenzie Allessie Donegal’s best player and the highest scoring player in high school history in the entire United States, helped her teammates to a second state title win in 3 years with an OT goal.

It was her 351st career goal in what she called the Indians’ “best played game this season.”

The Indians had defeated the Cougars 3-0 two weeks ago in the District 3 final.

But this time Palmyra played the Indians much tougher.

Both goalies Byrd and Donegal’s Aliza Johns were relentless in stopping scoring threats.

Palmyra’s press with Mia Julian, Lauren Wadas and Nicole Shank put Johns and the Indians’ defense to the test.

Donegal (28-1) outshot the Cougars 10-3 and totaled 9 corners to Palmyra’s 8. Byrd stopped eight shots.

Palmyra (19-6-1), playing in its fourth PIAA final since 2014, was looking for their third PIAA state title.
