The Elco Raiders traveled to Marywood University to play Scranton Prep in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament.
Scranton kept things close, but Elco ultimately had enough to pick up a 48-39 victory and advance to Wednesday’s second round in the Class 4A playoffs.
With the game tied at 33 each and two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Raiders stepped up.
They held Scranton Prep without a point over the next 4:35. The Raiders’ resulting 10-0 run, which included points from five different scorers – Amanda Smith, Ryelle Shuey, Julia Nelson, Kailey Eckhart and Jordan Rosengrant – gave them a 43-33 lead, with 1:37 remaining.
This was Elco’s first state playoff win since 1998, and the Raiders’ first state playoff appearance since 2003. The fourth-place finisher out of District Three, Elco, now has a 22-7 record, advanced to Wednesday’s second round of the PIAA Class AAAA postseason, against District Four runner-up Danville, at a site and time to be announced.
Ryelle Shuey and Katelyn Rueppel accounted for 23 points for the Raiders. Shuey finished with a team-high 12 points and Rueppel posted 11 points.
Scranton Prep’s Rachel Rose finished the contest with a game-high 18 points.
Scranton Prep, the District Two champions, concluded its season at 24-2.
