The Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers have finally lost a game this season. After winning 28 in a row, they lost today to the Twin Valley Raiders 10-6 in the District 3, Class 5A semifinal matchup played at Warwick High School.
Earlier in the season the Pioneers defeated Twin Valley in a non-league game to avenge their last loss to Twin Valley (24-2) in the finals of last year’s District 3 title game. That was the last time the Pioneers lost.
While both teams left many runners on base in the first two innings there was no scoring until the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the Pioneers’ Summer Peters hit a home run to give them a 1-0 lead. Taryn Hostetter tripled home Emily Platt for the second run in the fourth inning.
For the Raiders, facing a menacing sky filled with rain and the threat of a game called after 5 innings scored their first run on pitcher Sophia Marsalo’s RBI single.
Then the weather officially went nasty with 2 outs in the top of the fifth inning. The game was stopped for one hour.
When play resumed it was a different game completely.
The Raiders came out with guns blazing and scored 3 runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. But L-S responded with four more runs to take a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning.
In the top of the 7th inning the Raiders bunched together 3 singles good for 2 more runs to tie the game. On to extra innings.
In the top of the 9th inning Twin Valley scored 4 runs on 5 straight singles and two walks before an out was made.
That was the winning inning.
The finals will see Twin Valley playing Donegal who defeated Waynsboro 9-5 in their semifinal game.
L-S will play Waynesboro in the third-place gam Thursday.
Grace Marsalo retired 9 of the last 10 batters she faced to help put theRaiders on top.
