Donegal wins PIAA opener 6-4.

Fresh off their District 3, Class 5A title game loss on Friday, the Donegal Indians (22-2) bounced back with a 6-4 win against Connellsville High School. This was the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A tournament. Video highlight is of District 3 title game.

Starting pitcher Sierra Neiss pitched a complete game with 11 strike outs and 2 walks for the win.

Mia Burd took the loss for the Falcons. She allowed nine hits and six runs over six innings, striking out nine.

The Indians’ banged out 9 hits with Aysha Gibbs going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases. She also scored 2 runs. Donegal had their running shoes on stealing six total bases.

The Indians, who claimed the 2017 PIAA Class 5A championship, would love to add a second PIAA title to their trophy case. They certainly have the pieces to do it. The L-L League Section 3 champions finished the regular season 19-0 before falling to Elizabethtown in the first round of the L-L League tournament. The Indians came up empty in the District 3 tournament, too, losing to Twin Valley in the Class 5A final. Despite those postseason shortcomings, this team is ready for a long run in the state tournament. Sluggers Stephanie Reider (seven homers, 45 RBIs) and Aysha Gibbs (32 hits, 22 RBIs) will try and help cap Donegal’s 20-win campaign with PIAA gold.

They will play Bishop Shanahan in the quarterfinal game Thursday.
