Donegal’s amazing softball season has come to an end with a PIAA Class 5A semifinal loss to Penn-Trafford 5-4. Everyone was rooting for Donegal who is from Lancaster County because had they won, they would have been playing Lampeter-Strasburg in the state title game.
Still with a 24-3 record, the 2019 season is one of the great ones and right up there with the state title team in 2017.
Today however it was Penn-Trafford’s day as Morgan Nedley and Emma Armstrong drove in 4 RBIS between them to overcome two Donegal leads.
The Indians starting pitcher Sierra Neiss kept the game close with an eight strikeout performance giving up 8 hits and a walk.
Donegal took the lead in the first inning when Steph Reider hit a 2-run home run over the centerfield fence.
Jordan Parks smacked a 2-run double in the top of the third giving Donegal a 4-3 lead.
Down 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning, Donegal loaded the bases on 3 consecutive singles with nobody out.
But the Warriors pitcher got the next 3 hitters. The final out was a wild pitch that resulted in a Donegal runner being tagged out at the plate.
That was as close as Donegal would get to overcoming the Penn-Trafford’s 5-4 lead.
Donegal went 18-0 this season in league play, capturing the Section 3 L-L League title.
They also were the District 3 runner-up and finish the season in the PIAA semifinals.
