Pioneers strike silver in PIAA finals

The defending PIAA state champions come up a bit short today losing 5-3 to Penn Trafford Warriors at Penn State in the PIAA Class 5A finals.

All of the scoring was done in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. It was a tight, close game. But the Warriors had 4 extra base hits that made the difference along with some sterling defensive plays.

Two singles then a double by Warriors’ Emma Armstrong put Penn Trafford in the lead 2-0 in the top of the 3rd.

The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the inning when Jocelyn Bronco doubled and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by July Garber. With the bases loaded the Warriors’ catcher, a left hander, fired a strike to first and picked off a Pioneer runner. That was a squandered opportunity.

In the top of the 4th Little lead off with a triple for the Warriors and scored on a sacrifice bunt that turned into a 2-run play.

Three Pioneer singles in the bottom of the 4th inning made it 4-3.

But in the top of the 5th Emma Armstrong drilled a fastball over the centerfield fence for her 10th home run on the season and the fifth Warriors’ run.

Summer Peters went 3 for 4 for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers’ amazing seasons ends with a 28-2 record. Second place in the state is an amazing feat and that silver trophy will be showcased in the lobby long after this team of player’s graduate.

Congratulations, it was fun to watch this team play.
