L-S Pioneers football preview

The LAMPETER-STRASBURG PIONEERS football team is coached by John Manion. He enters his 22nd season with an overall record of 157-78. He has sent the Pioneers to the District 3 playoffs 11 years in a row. And he is the longest tenured coach L-S football has ever had. The video highlights are of QB Sean McTaggart last season.

When asked about his starting quarterback, dual-threat Junior Sean McTaggart, Manion believes he has the same body and arm strength as QB Bear Shank, who was the second leading passer in L-L League history.

McTaggart was 111 of 128 passing attempts last year for 1,714 yards and 13 TDs. He can also run. Last season McTaggart scored 11 TDs rushing for 706 yards.

In 2018-19 the Pioneers were tied for 5th place in Section 2 with a 2-4 record and a 6-6 record overall.

On the receiving end of McTaggert’s passes are Austin Stolfus 22 catches for 324 yards. And Jacob Kopelman 13 catches for 325 yards and 6 TDs.
McTaggert has two multi-purpose backs to pass or hand off to with Bryan McKim who rushed for 776 yards last year with 6 TDs while catching 10 passes for 168 yards and 1 TD. And Alex Knapp who wished for 357 yards and 4 TDS. He also caught 14 passes for 265 yards and 3 TDs.

Other Pioneers’ players to watch are OT Zac Shelley and LB Christian Garver and DB Logan Bradley will spearhead the Pioneers’ new-look 3-Stack Defense.

L-S lost a lot of very good players to graduation. But there is a good group to work with and their offense is going to test a lot of teams defensive skills.
