Palmyra comes up short in PIAA Final

Field Hockey PIAA Finals Class 2A:

The Palmyra field hockey team lost the state championship game 2-1 decision to Wyomming Valley West in the PIAA Class AA final.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second half on a goal by Lauren Wadas. That was their first shot on goal of the day.

The Spartans scored two goals to win. Wyoming Valley West, the champions from District Two, raised the Class AA state championship trophy with a 15-2 mark.

The outcome denied Palmyra, 22-4 and the District Three Class AA champion, another state title. It was the Cougars’ fifth appearance in a PIAA final over the last six years.

All-time, Palmyra is now 1-5-1 in PIAA finals. In those seven contests – all since 2005 – the Cougars have been outscored by a combined margin of 12-8.

Wyoming Valley West, the champions from District Two, raised the Class AA state championship trophy with a 15-2 mark.

Palmyra ended the 2019 regular season ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation, per MAX Field Hockey, and had four players who will advance to play field hockey at the next level. The team had been led by senior forwards Lauren Wadas and Mia Julian, who led the team with 37 and 19 goals, respectively.
