The Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers have defeated the Berks Catholic Saints 35-21 to win the District 3, Class 4A championship. They are only the second 8th seeded team to win a District 3 football title in Class 4A. This is their second District 3 football title. The first was in 2007.
They knocked off the 1st seed– undefeated York Suburban. And the 3rd and 4th seed to grab the gold. How remarkable is this feat? They beat McDevitt the 3rd seed, a 14 time district champ down 20-0 to win and beat 4 time District champion Berks Catholic who was in the District title game for the 7th year in a row.
One of the biggest plays of the game happened on the opening kick off. L-S kicked off and recovered the ball on a fumble on the 30 yard line. Three minutes later Beau Heyser caught a Connor Nolt pass and the Pioneers (11-3) led 7-0 with the point after kick.
The win is stunning when you think of the early season injuries this team has had to face. Their starting QB Sean McTaggert was injured and out for the season back in August. Connor Nolt stepped in and carried the team to the District title game.
L-S defense all year has been sterling and tonight they held Berks Catholic to just 139 yards. The big play maker for the Saints (8-3) was Abdul McFoy who scored a TD and ran for 123 yards.
L-S will face Thomas Jefferson (14-0) next week in the PIAA semifinals.
