Mounts beat Mules take 3 game lead

The second place Solanco Golden Mules came into War Memorial Field trailing the home team Ephrata Mounts by two games in Section Two. On the mound was their 2103 All-Star pitcher Zack Leonard, who is also having a fine 2014 campaign. They needed to win this game for a legitimate chance to win the section. They lost 5 to 1 to the Mounts. Who now look like sure fire Section Two champions as the season is fast coming to a close.

The Mounts, who lost 4 all-star players from last year’s squad and before taking the field this season did not have a starting pitcher who had thrown one inning of varsity baseball, did not seem overwhelmed about the evening’s task at hand. With good defense, a good pitch-to-contact pitcher named Morgan Stauffer on the mound, and great base running, they knew they could win this game. And that’s what they went out and did.

They played, as skipper Adrian Shelly suggested after the game “corrosive baseball”. By the beginning of the 3rd inning, Leonard had thrown 51 pitches. The first run of the game was scored by the Mounts on a balk call. One Mounts’ player scored from first on short line drive to left center field. Mounts’ catcher Colin Albright threw out two runners. And their shortstop ended a rally in the 5th inning with a live drive double play catch.

Do not take this team lightly would be my advice to anyone who has to play them from here on out. But anyone who has ever come to War Memorial to play one of Shelly’s teams over the last 17 years already knows that.
