Hempfield Wins District Volleyball Title

The Hempfield girls volleyball team has won its fourth District 3, Class 4A title in a row.

They defeated Wilson 3-2.

Hempfield entered the tournament as the number one seed. Wilson as the 6th seed.

Wilson’s record for the season is now 20-4, Hempfield 17-1.

The Black Knights won 14-25, 25-13, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-13 to win their fourth straight district title.

Sixth-seeded Wilson battled in every set and opened up the fifth with a 2-0 lead. The teams were tied at 9-9 and neither side had a lead larger than two points in the set until Hempfield (17-1) went up 14-11.

A kill by senior Bintou Sissoho got the Bulldogs (20-4) within 14-13 before Addison Leber recorded the game-winning kill for Hempfield.

For Hempfield, Reece Calabretta nailed 22 kills with 15 digs. Addison Leber had 27 kills and Melody Butzer set it up with 59 assists.

This is Hempfield’s 15th overall district title.

The first round of the PIAA tournament is next Tuesday for both teams.
