MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Marauders won a doubleheader against Mansfield Friday.
Carson Kulina threw a complete game shutout in a 3-0 game one win, and three Marauders limited Mansfield to one run and just five hits in a 2-1 win over the visiting Mountaineers Friday.
Millersville, now 16-3 overall, ran its record to 6-0 in PSAC East play with the doubleheader sweep. Along with Kulina’s gem in the opener, Colby Gromlich pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings in game two. Runs were at a premium in the doubleheader, with Millersville totaling five runs and 13 hits, but that was enough to take two.
Millersville has now won nine in a row over Mansfield and 15 of the last 16.
GAME 1
Kulina turned in his fifth consecutive start with at least five innings pitched and his fourth in a row with one run or fewer allowed. It was his first complete game of the season, and he recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts while walking just one and scattering three singles.
All of Millersville’s runs came in the bottom of the first inning before Mansfield starter Austin Lewis could settle in. Amani Jones and Mark McNelly started with singles, and Matthew Williams followed with one of his own, scoring Jones for second. One batter later, Keegan Soltis drove in McNelly and Williams with a single.
Lewis (1-1) and Kulina (4-0) both went the distance, but Lewis gave up six hits and two walks.
GAME 2
Millersville staked Gromlich to an early lead with Sam Morris’ RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Sabater squeezed home Hunter Stevens in the fourth, and that was all of Millersville’s offense.
Gromlich retired the Mountaineers in order in three of the first four innings, and gave up just a single in the fifth. He worked two batters into the sixth for his longest out of the year before giving way to Evan Rishell, who quickly escaped the inning with a 4-6-3 double play. Rishell ran into trouble in the seventh, and Mansfield put the tying run at second base before Harry Prince was called in to get the final out and the save.
