McDevitt wins: State title next

The Crusaders of Bishop McDevitt are returning to defend their state championship in Class 5A with a thrilling come from behind victory, 31-28 in the PIAA state semifinal against Peters Township. The game came down to the final play as the Crusaders kicked a winning field goal to edge the Indians. The state championship game is Friday Dec. 5, at Cumberland Valley High School at 7pm.

For Bishop McDevitt, this historically treacherous venue known as Mansion Park Stadium is starting to feel like a home away from home.

While another strong WPIAL champion landed in Altoona Saturday with bad intentions and a strong-armed and strong-willed quarterback, the Crusaders punched their second straight ticket to the PIAA Championships on the final play.

Once again, kicker Aidan Grella delivered that euphoric feeling. Grella’s 24-yard field goal as time expired sealed a 31-28 semifinal victory over Peters Township.
