Penn State Wrestling Sets NCAA Division I Record for Consecutive Dual Meet Wins

It was only a matter of time before Penn State wrestling broke the national dual meet wins record, and that time ended up being Saturday night in Nashville.

Cael Sanderson’s wrestling empire has won 77 consecutive dual meets, the train doesn’t appear to be slowing down, much less stopping, anytime soon.

This is why Penn State should have no problem breaking the overall NCAA record, which had been held by Division II St. Cloud State. Penn State has tied St. Cloud State at 77, so that record should be going down Jan. 10 against Rutgers at Rec Hall.

As usual, Sanderson downplayed the milestone when talking about it earlier this week.

“I don’t know. I can’t really speak for anybody else,” Sanderson told reporters Monday. “We’re just trying to get better, just trying to make progress as the year goes on, as a team, obviously. But we compete as individuals, so that’s kind of what we’re looking it. Just looking forward to a couple more fun matches.”

Penn State will have many more fun matches down the road. PSU is done competing in 2025, with its next bout not scheduled for three more weeks. Penn State will be tested in the Big Ten season, but overall is expected to run away with its 13th national title in the past 15 seasons under Sanderson.
