Districts: Wilson Stuns Township

May 25th:

Wilson won a district championship four years ago and a PIAA Tournament game the following season but its 19-12 win over Manheim Township Tuesday in a District 3 Class 3A semifinal might be the biggest victory in program history.

The Blue Streaks have won more games than any team in tournament history and they’re ranked among the top teams in the state. This is just their second semifinal loss in 12 appearances.

They average more than 16 goals per game and had an early five-goal lead Tuesday at Neffville before the third-seeded Bulldogs (16-4) did an about face and took over the game.

Wilson scored seven straight goals at one point and dominated the second-seeded Blue Streaks (17-5) in the second half, outscoring them 11-3 to clinch a spot in the district championship game Thursday at Central Dauphin at 7.

Wilson will meet fifth-seeded South Western (17-2), an 18-9 winner over top-seeded Hershey for the District 3, Class 3A title.

Township has won five district titles and was 10-1 in the semifinal round. It’s the only team this season to beat Twin Valley, the BCIAA champ that will play for the Class 2A title Thursday.

The Streaks are a true powerhouse but the Bulldogs were able to turn the tables on them. It started when Spleen made a switch at the draw circle, inserting freshman Emmi McClain. Township controlled the early portion of the game by winning nine of the first 13 faceoffs.

The Bulldogs ended up taking the final three draws of the first half and nine straight at one point as they took control of the game.

Kayla Wilkes, Alexa Kairis and Lindsey Fox each scored four goals for Wilson; Kate Troutman and Jenna Facciolli each had three.

The 19 goals are the most allowed by Township this season.

The Streaks, who had the best record in the Lancaster-Lebanon League and won the L-L League title were led by Sydney Witwer (five goals), Alyssa Dotter (two goals, two assists) and Rice (two goals, two assists).
