A Look at Boys Basketball Season

VIDEO HIGHLIGHT IS COCALICO BEATING GARDEN SPOT.

Section 1
Hempfield continues to roll in Section 1. The Knights have had some close games (Gov. Mifflin and Wilson) but they have already faced all but McCaskey in Section 1. The Knights are led by 6’2” jn guard, Miguel Pena (14 ppg). Cole Overbaugh (13 ppg) , 6’5” sn, adds a little inside and outside scoring plus rebounding for the Knights. The battle for the second slot should be interesting – Crest, McCaskey, and TWP are all 1-1.

Section 2

As expected Section 2 is very competitive. The Warwick Warriors are not big, but they lean on their defense and ball movement, spear-headed by York College commit, Tate Landis, 5’11 sn (16 ppg). The Warriors are 3-0 in the LL as of this writing. They face a 2-0 Lebanon HS team on Jan. 4th on the road. The Cedars are 6-2 and could be called a bit of a surprise team as they have had to mold new players into their line-up due to graduation and injuries. The Cedars are led by Marquis Ferreira, a 5’11” speedsters, with supreme ball skills. Etown is lurking. CV is battling the injury bug- big-time. Ephrata has shown a lot of improvement so far this season.

Section 3
Lampeter-Sttrasburg is once again rolling. The Pioneers are fast..play fast…and score points in bunches. Ty Burton (5’10”- 20 ppg) is the engine driver for the run away train. Burton continues to improve his game: he now features a nice runner to go along with twisty drives, pull-ups and the three ball. The battle for the second slot in this race could be very interesting. Manheim Central got of to a rough start but now sit at 2-1: one game back of LS. Trey Grube, 5’10” jn, leads the Barons and the LL with a 22 ppg average. Spot, Cocalico, and Solanco are one game behind MC in the race for an LL slot.

Section 4
ELCO leads the pack at this point. The Raiders have a big line-up. Corey Attivo, 6’8’ sn (14 ppg), has a variety of moves in the post- real soft hands as well. The Raiders can protect the rim area with the best of them- they are only giving up an average of 40 ppg. Lancaster Catholic (2-1) travels to Myerstown on 1/7 for an early season show down.

Section 5
Columbia (6-0) and Lancaster Mennonite (5-2) are on a collision course. Their first scheduled meeting is Jan. 13 (an LLhoops live stream game). Columbia is led by a senior combo of Kerry Glover (6’1” , 15 ppg ) and J’von Collazo (6’1” ,13 ppg). LMHS features high-scoring Cam Hurst (6’2” jn, 21 ppg). the Blazers big-man, David Weaver, should be back on the courts soon as he is recovery from an injury. The next to last game on Feb 7 at Columbia might be the game that determines the Section 5 winner.
